On the day of Piercy's eleventh birthday, her grandmother receives a visit from the Magic Secretary Bird. When the bird gives her a special quill pen for writing stories that will come true, a thrilling adventure begins to unfold for Piercy and her two siblings. A few days later Piercy meets a flying horse named Copperwing. Together they fly to the island of Unopuno, where she is soon joined by her younger brother and sister, Albion and Noë. Accompanied by Copperwing, Shelly the mermaid, Windrider the gull, and a boy named Rowan, they embark on a quest to find and rescue two children who have been missing from Unopuno for a year.
