School Library Journal
A whimsical gateway to the practice of yoga asana for very young readers.
Yoga provides a great introduction to mindfulness for young children because it promotes the habit of being present in one’s body. Readers are guided through beginner yoga poses using straightforward bullet points. The text relates each pose back to a familiar animal, with a reminder to breathe, and emphasizes that yoga is for every body. The bright, whimsical illustrations feature unicorns of different sizes depicted in their own versions of the highlighted pose. The illustrations are also humorous. One unicorn takes a bite from their yoga mat; one unicorn farts while in downward-facing dog. The back matter offers additional information on yogic breathing and mindfulness techniques to share. However, the scope of the text does not include details on the history of yoga and its cultural origins. Overall, this book is a simple, accessible introduction to the practice and benefits of yoga.
